Tuesday Swindle and 628 Club
The “Tuesday 628 Swindle” has taken place at Croham Hurst since the 1970’s.
This ten hole swindle is played on Tuesday afternoons after the Ladies tee times and is entered via the Swindle folder kept in the 19th, ONCE PLAY HAS BEEN COMPLETED. There is currently a £4 entry fee with the stableford winner(s) receiving up to £30 in total. For those still working entry is possible as late as daylight permits! The balance of monies received is saved towards an informal “pie and pint” at the end of summer when the clocks go back and a slightly more formal dinner at the end of winter when the clocks spring forward.
There is a one hour block booking of the tee on Tuesdays throughout the year with a couple of exceptions when the Ladies have an all-day competition. Members new and old can enter each week to be included in the draw for the block booked tee times. The draw takes place early on each Tuesday morning. Members receive email notification of their tee time by about 9am on the day. Although the Tuesday swindle is a ten hole competition the block booking timing allows entrants to play the full 18 holes.
Members can of course book their own tee times to play either 18 or just the 10 holes as they prefer so those still working can play in the swindle quite late in summer. The 628 reference in the name actually reflects that in times gone by members still at work but wishing to support the Club and 19th through the winter months popped in briefly once a week just to socialise. Originally any day, you guessed, between 6pm and 8pm, but now replaced by the year-long Tuesday 628 Swindle.
All very relaxed with lots of laughs, a couple of beers and quality food twice a year from the kitchen team.
Pictured above are some of the ”swindlers” in November 2022 and below are presentations of the annual Schwindlers Cross (Autumn) in 2022 to Peter Rowe and the “Founders Cup” (Spring) in 2015 by long term 628 Organiser Alf Stringer to Paul Kelly Sr. The Cup was donated by past Mens Captain Alec Chilcott and Paul was actually also Mens Captain of CHGC in 2015.
