Tuesday Swindle and 628 Club
The “Tuesday Swindle” in conjunction with the 628 Club has taken place at Croham Hurst for some forty years. Pictured above is the presentation of the annual “Founders Cup” by long term Director of 628 Operations, Alf Stringer, to the winner, Paul Kelly, in 2015. Paul was actually Captain of CHGC that year. The “Founders Cup” for the 628 club was donated by past CHGC Captain Alec Chilcott.
There are a number of “swindles” or roll ups at the Club. The Tuesday ten hole swindle takes place after the Ladies tee times and is entered via the Swindle folder in the 19th, AFTER completion of play. Through the summer months there is a £3 entry fee with the stableford winner(s) receiving up to £30 in total. For those still working entry is possible as late as daylight permits! The balance of monies received is saved towards an end of summer dinner and presentation of “Schwindlers Cross” for the best score that day.
During winter the Tuesday swindle continues, mainly populated by retired members, but all still welcome. In addition the 628 Club begins particularly for those members still at work but wishing to support the Club and 19th, popping in briefly once a week just to socialise. Originally any day, you guessed, between 6pm and 8pm, but now more often on a Tuesday between 5 and 7! A reduced fee is payable by non swindlers all going towards the Founders Cup dinner held just after the clocks spring forward. The Cup is awarded to the highest scoring player that day.
All very relaxed with lots of laughs, a couple of beers and quality food from Antonio and his team.
The new booking system may incorporate dedicated times for CHGC members to just turn up on a Tuesday afternoon, partner up and “SWINDLE”! Watch out for that, check with the Pro or contact Swindle organisers Tim Tandy or Paul J Kelly via email to email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org or phone (details in the Club diary or on the website) for any further information.
