CHGC was proud to host this very prestigious competition for the first time and in our Centenary year.
Here is a brief summary of the competition.
In the qualifying on Friday, the leading player was David Waite of The
Wisley Club who had the best round of the day at Addington Palace, a
67, and a 71 at Croham Hurst for an aggregate score of 138. 2nd on
139 was Kieron Lovelock of Hindhead G C. He had a 68 at Croham Hurst,
the best round of the day there. 3rd was Josh White of Chipstead G C
with 40 and 4th Tom Richardson of Walton Heath G C with 142. The top
16 qualified for the matchplay at Croham Hurst, starting Saturday
morning, with 3 on 148 having to play sudden death for 2 positions.
Conditions were tricky because of the dry weather and strong wind.
On Sunday morning, the semi-finals were between Keith Waters of West
Byfleet G C, who beat David Corbin (Hindhead) by 2/1 and Josh White,
who beat Ben Taylor (Walton Heath) by one hole. Again there was a
strong wind although this began to drop as the final progressed with
rain starting about half-way. Fortunately the heavy rain held off
until the final had completed. This was won by Josh White who beat
Keith Waters by 2/1. It was the second time in 3 years that Josh,
aged 19 and an England A international, had been Surrey Amateur
Champion, the title he first won at West Hill G C in 2009. He did not
defend last year because of playing in a national event at St Andrews,
so he has won 8 successive matches in the championships. He is
without doubt a worthy winner.
